Youth Forward believes that young people must play a central role in social change efforts.
When addressing issues that directly affect youth, the voice and perspective of young people are key to developing solutions that work. In order to incorporate youth perspective in its policy work, Youth Forward has set aside one-half of the seats on its board of directors for young adults.
Youth Forward is currently providing strategic advice and training support to youth organizing efforts in Sacramento and Solano Counties involving Latinx and African American youth and young people in the foster care system.
In addition, Youth Forward is co-leading an effort to secure long-term public funding for children and youth services in the City of Sacramento through Sacramento Kids First. Like most cities, Sacramento invests little in child/youth development and prevention. Its biggest investment is in police services. Our goal is to create a meaningful and stable investment in children and youth through a measure on the March 2020 ballot that will require the City of Sacramento to invest 2.5% of its unrestricted revenues in services for children and youth. The measure also creates an advisory committee to create a 3 year plan and evaluation to guide how the funds are invested. Half of the members of this committee will be young people 24 years of age or younger.
