Youth Forward believes that young people must play a central role in social change efforts.
When addressing issues that directly affect youth, the voice and perspective of young people are key to developing solutions that work. In order to incorporate youth perspective in its policy work, Youth Forward has set aside one-half of the seats on its board of directors for young adults.
Youth Forward is currently providing strategic advice and training support to youth organizing efforts in Sacramento and in other parts of California.
In addition, Youth Forward is co-leading an effort to secure long-term public funding for children and youth services in the City of Sacramento through Sacramento Kids First. Like most cities, Sacramento invests inconsistently in child/youth development and prevention. Its biggest investment is in police services. We recently co-led a ballot measure campaign to create a children and youth fund in our city budget with the goal of stabilizing and increasing funding for youth services long-term. Unfortunately we faced a vigorous opposition campaign led by the police and fire unions and our city leadership, and did not win the measure. The campaign for kids continues. Check out a recent op-ed by the Sacramento Bee editorial board in praise of our efforts.
