This summer, Cayla Divodi and Youlin Zhu, two local young people who aspire to enter medical school, conducted research on our city’s vape and smoke shops and found that over half of the 16 stores investigated are selling illegal, dangerous products. For example, in one-third of the stores, they found kratom and 70H for sale, an addictive substance implicated in over 242 overdose deaths. Kratom and 7OH were banned by the CA Department of Public Health last year. Cayla and Youlin conducted their research in July as part of a summer internship at Youth Forward. On August 19th, Cayla, Youlin, and Tasha Johnson, Youth Forward’s executive director, presented this research to the Sacramento City Council. For their letter to the Council, please click here. Here is a list of Youth Forward’s publications used to bring awareness to and advance our work. Publications include papers, op-eds, reports, policy proposals, and letters of recommendations.
